Project Management Methodologies

Understanding Project Management Methodologies: Waterfall, Scrum, and Kanban

One of the first key decisions so set a consulting project up for sucess is selecting the right methodology based on the project goals. Some of the most widely adopted project methodologies are Waterfall, Scrum, and Kanban. Each offers unique advantages and is suited to specific project types.

Waterfall Methodology

Waterfall methodology uses a linear, sequential process to complete a project. It involves a clear division of phases where each phase must be completed before moving on to the next.

The Waterfall model is ideal for implementations with well-defined goals and stable requirements, such as net-new implementations and crm migrations. However, this approach can be less flexible in adapting to changes once the project is underway, making it less suitable for projects with developing or unclear requirements.

Scrum

The Scrum approach focuses on creating a shippable product efficiently with an iterative approach. Scrum breaks work into manageable deliverables that are then assigned to sprints, typically lasting two to four weeks.

In contrast to the Waterfall methodology, Scrum focuses on creating usable deliverables that can deliver value without waiting on the rest of the project to be completed and also allows for adaptability through re-prioritization of work items each sprint cycle.

This approach is ideal for projects where requirements are less clear by allowing for users to give feedback and direction early in the process.

Kanban

Kanban describes what we typically think of as a support desk process.  This approach uses a kanban board to track work items (often refered to as cases or tickets) through columns such as "New", "In Progress", and "Complete".

Kanban is particularly effective in environments with a steady flow of tasks, such as post go-live support or ad-hoc enhancement requests.

Choosing the Right Methodology

Selecting the best project methodology for a given projectdepends on several factors, including clarity of  requirements, timeline flexibility, and and whether the project goal is fixed or ongoing.
